Interpreting Tradition to Infuse Architecture with the Spirit of Contemporary Hunan Culture
Changsha, Hunan Province

Changsha, renowned for landmarks like Pozi Street and Huangxing Road, pulsates with entertainment and culture. It’s a city where people revel in the communal spirit, embracing modern leisure while honoring the 3,000-year legacy of Xiangchu culture.  The storied streets and iconic riverside stilt houses are testaments to this heritage and in this context, exists a duty of historical preservation.  New commercial facilities like Sunshine 100’s Phoenix Street emblematic of this historical vibe.

Positioned on the Xiang River’s west bank, flanked by Yuelu Mountain and near the South Second Ring Road, this new commercial and entertainment center enjoys a prime location.  It’s proximity to esteemed institutions like Central South University, Hunan University, and Hunan Normal University blending cultural richness with a youthful demographic.  This setting calls for a commercial endeavor that’s not only contemporary and chic but also culturally resonant.

Integrating streets, alleys, and courtyards into a modern commercial logic to create a vibrant ambiance and experiential scenes.

To elevate the commercial atmosphere and enrich the shopping and entertainment experience, the design seamlessly blends streets, alleys, and courtyards with thoughtfully planned commercial flow.  The facade design blends modern architecture with motifs inspired by traditional western Hunan structures. This fusion of old and new not only serves modern functions but also evokes the beauty of traditional design.  It resonates with the nostalgia for local architecture, while the juxtaposition of classic and contemporary elements on the commercial street facades captivates visitors, drawing them into the heart of the commercial area.

The design interweaves residential courtyards with the traditional layout of western Hunan’s ancient towns, fostering organic village-style clusters.  This layout, with its meandering streets and alleys, forms intimate public courtyards.  Inspired by the region’s historic urban design, the alternating pattern of storefronts and private homes offers both openness and seclusion, with each street section establishing a distinct spatial node that enriches the visitor experience.
