The town of Dachuan is located in a suburban area of Shiyan, Hubei Province about a 10-minute drive from the main urban area.  While the current natural environment is favorable, previous development projects have eroded and damaged the town’s original rural character.   Revitalization and enhancement efforts will focus on the needs of the town’s residents, and to create new tourism amenities and programs tailored to a well-defined target audience.   The revitalization proposal included the creation of interactive rural village lifestyle scenarios that encourage visitors to participate in the bucolic daily lives of the town’s permanent residents.

Recreation, Wellness and Learning Contribute to Revitalization

Based on the needs of the town’s people and to promote health and wellness in tourism, a collaboration with the First People’s Hospital of Shiyan was established to develop a multi-generational community of three clusters within the existing town to include an intergenerational community center, upgraded outpatient medical facilities, rehabilitation, and assisted living, along with new recreational amenities.

Leveraging the town's natural environment, an existing research facility will be renovated into a new multi-purpose community center combining a Cultural and Nature Study Center with Health and Fitness facilities.  Extending from this new community facility the town intends to renovate and develop new mixed-age and cultural parks, and linear village and mountain parks into the surrounding rural landscape.  This transformation when completed will enhance the commercial appeal of the town, the permanent residents’ sense of community and offer visitors a diversity of cultural and natural experiences.

Multi-Purpose Community Center and Park extensions

The town’s revitalization guided by three key principles;

Preserve the town’s original rural charm by retaining and extracting its intrinsic historical elements.  A small-town homecoming path connecting three major landscape parks will be developed to evoke an authentic rural landscape.

Provide for the more refined daily needs of visitors by upgrading accommodations, commercial amenities, and public facilities by establishing a family neighborhood, vacation community, and a youth community that constitute three distinct lifestyle scenarios to attract a range of visitors and weekend residents.

Fulfil the spiritual needs of visitors and residents within the public space, waterfront and new facilities by organizing and hosting seasonal community activities and events to promote a familiar social interaction and cater to the emotional needs of visitors and residents.
