Capturing the essence of the picturesque Jiangnan region
Huangpu District, Shanghai

The strategic location of this cultural exchange center near Shanghai’s Expo Riverside is well positioned to become a cultural hub with 3,600 square meters across three floors of gallery theme space celebrating Southern China’s heritage. The venue includes a lobby reception, tea & coffee bars, meeting rooms, recreational space and display areas to accommodate an array of cultural, business and conference functions.

The design concept “Capturing the Essence of Southern China,” employs a contemporary methodology to distill the essence of oriental aesthetics.  Utilizing white walls as a canvas, ink delineates poetic expressions, while a monochromatic palette of black and white dominates, reflecting the region’s culture. This synthesis of regional culture and modern design articulates the distinctive allure of Southern China.

Jiangyin Yangtze River Bridge is the centerpiece of a relief sculpture in the building lobby.

Iconic art screen was created to illustrate the Jiangyin section of the "Ten Thousand mile of the Yangtze River".

An iconic art screen was crafted to represent the Jiangyin segment of the “Ten Thousand Mile of the Yangtze River.” The screen’s front (south entrance) showcases the splendor of this Southern Chinese city, with the Jiangyin Yangtze River Bridge as its focal point. The piece is composed of 10,472 aluminum scales, each assuming one of twenty distinct shapes. These scales undergo an oxidation process, which gives them a dynamic range of colors that shift with the light’s angle. The artwork’s design, with its waves and interplay of light and shadow, breaks down and then reassembles the city’s image, offering a portrayal of Jiangyin that is both historically profound and culturally vibrant, set against the backdrop of the Yangtze River in Southern China.

Various forms of Jiangyin art and relics are on display in the first level.

Technology and culture blend together, highlighting the allure of Jiangnan.

The first floor’s design theme, “Water Charm of Southern China,” pays homage to Jiangyin’s heritage, a city synonymous with water and the cradle of Southern Chinese culture. Its intricate waterways lend a unique charm, echoed in everything from the art screens to the display pieces, all capturing the essence of Southern China’s aquatic allure.

The lobby doubles as an urban gallery, encapsulating the city’s saga and cultural unity. It’s a mosaic of Jiangyin’s evolution, its narrative, recollections, and visions for the future, presented through diverse exhibits.

Reception spaces on the upper floor incorporate rich cultural and artistic elements.

The 27th and 28th floors, inspired by the “Ink Melody of Southern China,” serve as versatile event areas. They blend literary and ink art themes, featuring exhibits like paintings, calligraphy, photos, and traditional crafts, all contributing to an artistically vibrant setting. The entryway and welcome area boast multimedia features that offer interactive views of the city, fostering dialogue, drawing investments, and merging tech with contemporary design.
