Located near Xintiandi in Shanghai, the site enjoys a prime location in the city center and is one the few remaining residential areas still featuring traditional Shikumen (stone gate) houses.  The site is like a vessel holding the way of life of previous generations beneath the plane trees.

Memories are woven together, bearing witness to the tumultuous past, set against a backdrop of Sino-Western cultural amalgamation.  The site invites one to embrace novel experiences and insights from bygone eras, thereby transforming the old site’s purpose and revitalizing its legacy, thus enlivening the “spirit of the place.”

The landscape design focuses on preserving the memories of old Shanghai, specifically the historically valuable Hongning Lane, Heming Lane, and Shunxin Lane within the site. This allows urban heritage to become public cultural assets and allows architectural styles of different eras to continue to exist, creating a walkable neighborhood that tells a story.  In the fusion of Chinese and Western cultures, new experiences and inspirations are inherited, creating a blend of architectural style and abundant greenery to become a nostalgic memory of the past.

Preserving the Shanghai style to enrich local flavor

Creating the fifth facade of the site, a cultural ground sculpture is placed at the visual focal point to enrich the ground texture. The combination of outdoor seating and plants enhances the park experience and the design tone of the site.  A flexible space was created on the square, reserving a space for art activities that pay tribute to modern pioneers, creating a trendy marketplace for young people and fashion.
